A question we often ask new clients is how they feel about faux plants and florals, and we get a range of responses. Some people admit right off the bat that they do not have a green thumb and NEED fauxs, while some people express worry about cleaning a faux plant and the upkeep. We personally love faux greenery and use them in most of our projects, so we are going to share a few tips for using fauxs in your home!

A quick note about what we like about faux house plants and floral arrangements! Having natural elements in the home instantly brightens it up and makes it feel more homey. Having natural elements indoors is a stress and anxiety reducer, and the good news is it doesn’t make a difference if it’s real or fake. We are always adding some sort of greenery to a room because a room doesn’t feel complete without it, so whether it’s real or faux, you should have some sort of plant in your home.  If it’s between having no greenery or faux greenery, go faux!

Also consider that faux florals and plants will stay beautiful for years, so if you don’t have a green thumb or don’t have the time to care for your plants, your plants will still look fabulous! If you don’t have the budget for purchasing live flowers regularly, you can make the one-time investment for faux florals and have them brighten a room every day. Fauxs are also allergy-free for anyone concerned about that!

Ok, on to the tips:

1. There’s Something for Everyone

The floral arrangement above is faux if you can believe that! There are SO many styles of fauxs; branches (like above), florals, plants, moss, grasses, bulbs, and succulents. Any sort of plant you can think of has a faux version of it out there! We love using palms in our more contemporary projects, and small succulents and ferns on shelves… the more you play with it, the more you will find the mix of plants and locations that feel right to you! Pick and choose your location for where a faux houseplant will go. Entry tables, coffee tables, bathroom counters, and shelves are prime locations for fauxs because you want your decor in those areas to always look fresh, and they might not get adequate sun for a real plant.

2. Mix and Match

Our Associate Designer Lilly loves mixing faux plants and real florals in her home. She always has two real bouquets in her home: one in her bedroom and the other in her family room, but that is the extent of what she wants to keep up! She uses faux plants everywhere else; on shelves, table tops, and on the kitchen and bathroom countertops. This allows some variety (and the fun!) of new arrangments in important locations, but gives the freedom of low upkeep everywhere else!

3. Cleaning Tips

With regular dusting, you shouldn’t have to worry about your plants building up a worrying amount of dust. When you do get dust, simply shake your florals to release dust. For leaves and other house plants, take a dusting rag and wipe the leaves to remove dust. Depending on the material, you can dampen your rag to help clean. You can also do this for florals if needed. If you are unsure about what material your faux is or how to clean it, reach out to the manufacturer for cleaning information!

4. A Note on Quality

Quality matters when it comes to faux house plants, but especially to florals! The difference between a cheap faux flower and a quality faux flower is noticeable, so not cheaping out on your floral arrangements is important. When it comes to larger statement faux plants, having quality becomes important on the cleanability of the leaves, the realness of the trunks, and the look of the dirt and pot. Feel free to use cheaper faux plants for smaller plants that will go on shelves, tabletops, and counters as they aren’t as front and center, and they are more likely to get messy and need to be replaced sooner. Succulents can often look just as good no matter the cost, so take that into consideration.

With these few tips in mind, you’re ready to add faux greenery to your home! Check out a few examples of fauxs that we have used in the projects from our portfolio.
