We recently posted the Modern Noir Ranch project to the RWD portfolio, which features some very special occasional tables that we would like to highlight in this post! The coffee table, side table, and drinks table in the living room were completely custom made my La Dorado Eco-Flow Woodworx.
A quick word about La Dorado Forest Preserve and the work being done there. They are furniture makers with a focus on eco-friendly luxury furniture design that preserves forests and protects our ecosystems. Their system guarantees ethically sourced timber materials because they are involved in every link of the supply chain, from selecting and cutting down the tree to delivering the furniture piece, ensuring their environmental impact is minimized.
The design of these tables started with a rough sketch that we made of the general design concept of the tables and the overall dimensions that we envisioned for each table. We sent that information to the furniture designers, and they sent back more refined sketches of the tables to scale. Here are the original sketches of the design concept:
After that, the logistics of how to create the curved shapes we envisioned out of wood was the next design detail to figure out. The designer at La Dorada had the idea of layering disks of wood on top of each other and making a lathe that would cut the wood down into smooth forms in the shapes we were envisioning. Here you can see sheets starting to get layered into a section for the lathe:
We were then presented with several stain options. Some of them showed the layers of wood, and some were more opaque. We loved being able to see the layers and craftsmanship that went into them, and hope to showcase that in a future project, but for this specific project we wanted the finish to be more opaque and glossy so the tables didn’t pull focus from the natural stone on the fireplace.
Here you can see the drinks table completed with its finish done, and the side table in the back with the bottom half smoothed and the top half not yet smooth and no finish applied!
Here are the completed tables in place in the client’s living room! The tables are gorgeously understated and flowing perfectly with all the other design elements in the room, including the curved sofa and labradorite fireplace stone.
In an age of instant gratification, a process like this takes time and care, so making something from scratch has become an art form you don’t see often. However, doing something with this amount of intentionality is special, and it involves a team of people. We thank the team at La Dorado, who were amazing to work with, as well as our clients who were given a concept for a design and still said “yes”!
