What if the fear holding you back isn’t failure—but the thought of never trying at all?
In this episode, I sit down with Elliot James, founder of a multi–award-winning international interior architecture studio, to talk honestly about what it takes to build a creative career that spans countries, cultures, and markets. Elliot didn’t follow a traditional path. He didn’t wait until everything felt “safe.” Instead, he followed his curiosity, his ambition, and his passion for design—sometimes with nothing more than a laptop, a website, and a willingness to knock on doors.
If you’re an interior designer (or aspiring designer) who dreams of bigger projects, international opportunities, or breaking into luxury residential, hospitality design, wellness-focused environments, or commercial projects—but you’re afraid of getting it wrong—this conversation is for you. We talk about persistence, risk-taking, networking, word-of-mouth referrals, and how adapting to different cultures can open doors you never knew existed.
This episode is a reminder that creative careers aren’t built by waiting. They’re built by moving forward—one bold decision at a time.

5 Lessons from Building an International Interior Design Career
Elliot’s journey is a clear reminder that long-term creative success isn’t built by eliminating fear—it’s built by deciding not to let fear be in charge.
Throughout our conversation, he was honest about the uncertainty, risk, and self-doubt that come with building a creative career, especially one that spans countries and markets. But what stood out most was his mindset: “the fear of failure wasn’t as bad as the failure of fear of not starting at all.”
That mindset shaped every bold move he made, from retraining in interior architecture to launching an international studio.
If you’re waiting until you feel confident, experienced, or “qualified enough,” you may be waiting longer than necessary. Confidence isn’t the prerequisite for action—it’s the result of it.
The designers who build long-term success are the ones who take the first step, knowing they’ll figure things out along the way.
Below are the biggest lessons I want you to take away—especially if you’re navigating fear, ambition, or the desire to grow beyond where you are now.
1| Follow Your Passion (Even When the Path Isn’t Clear)
Elliot didn’t start with a perfectly mapped plan. He followed what fascinated him—drawing, building, furniture design, and eventually interior architecture. Each step built on the last. When his branding and graphic design career started competing with his passion for interiors, he made a choice: stay safe, or go all in.
This is such an important reminder for designers. Your creative career doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else. When you follow what genuinely excites you, the skills stack grows, and clarity emerges, leading to opportunities that begin to align. Passion isn’t a weakness—it’s a strategic advantage.
2| Build Your Career Through Networking and Word-of-Mouth Referrals
One of the biggest myths in design is that success comes from perfectly curated marketing alone. Elliot’s early growth came from showing up—knocking on doors, attending events, meeting people, building relationships, and having real conversations about design.
Especially in international markets, trust matters. People hire designers they feel connected to. Word-of-mouth referrals remain one of the most powerful tools in building a sustainable interior design business. Focus on relationships first, and the projects will follow.
3| Take Risks and Embrace an Adventurous Spirit
Moving to Singapore with no clients took courage. Elliot openly shared that the first six months felt like “tumbleweed.” But that willingness to take a risk created space for growth that would never have happened otherwise.
Every successful creative career involves risk—starting your own studio, entering a new market, raising your rates, or saying yes to a project that stretches you. The fear of failure will always exist. But as Elliot said so beautifully, the fear of never trying is far worse.
4| Adapt to Different Cultures to Compete Globally
One of the most valuable insights from this episode is how Elliot adapts his business strategy across cultures. In Singapore, clients value precision and detail. In Dubai, face-to-face trust and relationships are essential. Understanding these nuances allows his studio to thrive internationally.
If you want to work on international residential projects, hospitality design, or global commercial work, cultural awareness isn’t optional—it’s a skill. Designers who learn how people live, work, and make decisions across cultures gain a major competitive edge.
5| Elevate Your Work Through Client Experience and Wellness Design
A recurring theme in Elliot’s work is client experience. From bespoke furniture to wellness-focused interiors, every decision is about how a space makes someone feel.
Luxury today isn’t just about materials—it’s about quality of life. Wellness design, circadian lighting, recovery spaces, and technology-free zones are shaping the future of residential and hospitality projects. Designers who understand this shift position themselves as strategic partners—not just decorators.
Final Thoughts
My conversation with Elliot reminded me that there’s no single “right” way to build a creative career. What matters is persistence, curiosity, and the courage to move forward even when things feel uncertain.
Elliot’s journey proves that ambition, paired with adaptability and passion, can lead to a deeply fulfilling international design practice.
