Is talent alone enough to build a successful interior design career? This episode is a powerful reminder that creativity is only one piece of the puzzle.

Many aspiring interior designers spend years refining their aesthetic but struggle with the business side—pricing, vendor relationships, execution, and confidently bringing their ideas to life. Without those skills, even the most inspired creative vision can remain just that: an idea.

In this conversation, I sit down with Jamie Young, co-founder of Jamie Young Co., to explore how she transformed a lifelong passion for design into a nationally recognized home furnishings company. Jamie shares how her upbringing, education at Parsons School of Design, love of art history, global travel, and willingness to embrace uncertainty shaped both her creative identity and entrepreneurial journey.

Whether you’re launching your interior design business, developing your own creative process, or learning how to work more effectively with vendors, Jamie offers practical wisdom that reminds us success isn’t about having all the answers—it’s about combining inspired design with thoughtful business execution, authentic relationships, and the courage to keep moving forward.

  • Build business through consistent creative execution.

  • Discover your unique creative design DNA.

5 Rules for Long-Term Success in the Interior Design Business

Building a successful design career requires far more than artistic talent. Throughout my conversation with Jamie, one message became clear: lasting success comes from blending creative identity with business execution, meaningful relationships, and a willingness to keep learning.

Here are Jamie Young’s 5 rules every interior designer can apply.

Rule #1: Your Ideas Only Matter When You Execute Them

Many creatives wait until they feel completely prepared before taking the next step. Jamie reminds us that successful businesses aren’t built on perfect ideas—they’re built through action. She started with only a few products, a willingness to experiment, and the determination to solve problems as they appeared.

      As Jamie says,

“Everyone has an idea. The difference between someone with an idea and a business is the execution… you just actually have to do it.”

As an interior designer, your portfolio, your processes, and your confidence all grow through experience—not perfection. Taking imperfect action is often the fastest path toward building momentum.

Rule #2: Know Your Creative DNA Before Chasing Every Trend

One of my favorite parts of our conversation was hearing Jamie describe how global travel, product design, and exposure to different cultures helped shape the identity of her company. Yet despite evolving over nearly three decades, she continually returns to one important question:

“Who are you? You can never be all things to all people.”

That advice applies just as much to interior designers as it does to product manufacturers. Understanding your personal style, the types of clients you serve best, and the work you’re passionate about creates consistency that clients recognize and trust. Trends will always come and go, but your authentic design perspective becomes your greatest competitive advantage.

Rule #3: Business Success Depends on Strong Vendor Relationships

Design projects don’t succeed because of beautiful specifications alone. They succeed because of communication, planning, and trusted partnerships.

Jamie shares valuable insight into what happens behind the scenes at a product company—from inventory management and customer service to freight, logistics, and quality control. She encourages designers to ask thoughtful questions about stock availability, lead times, product longevity, specifications, and shipping before making recommendations to clients.

      She also reminds us:

      “The relationship side is critical.”

Building long-term relationships with vendors creates better communication, stronger support, and greater confidence as your business grows.

Rule #4: Balance Creativity with Smart Business Decisions

One of the recurring themes throughout our conversation is that successful entrepreneurs constantly wear two hats.

Jamie never separated her artistic vision from financial responsibility. She embraced creativity while also paying close attention to profitability, pricing, and calculated risks. She understood that beautiful products only become sustainable businesses when they’re supported by sound business decisions.

For interior designers, that means learning budgeting, project management, client communication, and business systems with the same enthusiasm you bring to selecting finishes and creating beautiful spaces.

Rule #5: Keep Your Curiosity Alive Throughout Your Career

Even after nearly three decades in business, Jamie continues to approach design with curiosity, experimentation, and excitement.

Reflecting on her early years, she shared:

“Let’s just keep doing some wow.”

It’s easy to become overly cautious as experience grows. Data, systems, and business strategy are essential—but they should never replace the creative spark that made you fall in love with design in the first place. Protecting that sense of wonder allows your work to stay fresh, authentic, and deeply fulfilling.

      Final Thoughts

Successful interior designers don’t simply become better creatives—they become better business owners, collaborators, and leaders. Jamie’s story demonstrates how creative confidence grows alongside thoughtful execution, authentic relationships, and a commitment to continual learning.

Whether you’re just beginning your design career or looking to elevate an established business, combining artistic vision with practical business skills will create the foundation for long-term success.
