Are you working harder, taking on more projects, and increasing your revenue—but still wondering where the profit is going?
Many creative entrepreneurs start their interior design business because they love the work, but over time, they find themselves overwhelmed by the administrative side, unpredictable income, and the pressure to constantly create more.
In this episode, I’m joined by business strategist Sallie Ogden, founder of Brimm and creator of Brimm Capital, to talk about why more revenue does not always equal more freedom. Sallie shares how shifting your focus from chasing revenue growth to building predictable profit can completely transform the way you run your business.
If you want to simplify your interior design business, create stronger business systems, improve operational efficiency, and build a clear plan for long-term profitability, this conversation will help you rethink how you approach scaling. Sallie breaks down why intentional planning, smart automation, AI tools, and niching down can help you grow a sustainable creative career without burning yourself out.

4 Ways to Simplify Your Interior Design Business and Create More Profit
Building a profitable interior design business is not about adding more services, creating more offers, or constantly chasing more clients. Instead, sustainable growth comes from creating simplicity, structure, and intentional systems.
Here are the key lessons that can help you create more freedom and profitability in your business.
1. Shift Your Focus From Revenue Growth to Business Profitability
One of the biggest mindset shifts for creative entrepreneurs is understanding that revenue is not the same as profit. It is easy to look at a growing income number and assume your business is succeeding, but if your expenses, pricing, and systems are not intentional, you can still end up exhausted and underpaid.
Sallie shared that many entrepreneurs start their business by simply charging for their skills and then trying to grow by doing more. However, working harder does not automatically create more freedom.
She explained:
“Revenue is actually my ego, and profit is what creates freedom.”
For interior designers, creating profitability starts with understanding the true cost of running your business. Instead of choosing pricing based only on what you think clients will pay, create a plan based on your business expenses, desired income, and profit goals.
A clear financial strategy allows you to make better decisions around pricing, projects, and growth.
2. Build Systems That Support Your Business Scaling
Many business owners think scaling means adding more clients, more offers, more platforms, or more team members. But Sallie explains that true scaling comes from creating repeatable systems that allow your business to grow without creating more chaos.
Through Brimm Capital, Sallie helps entrepreneurs look at five important areas of their business:
Operations
Sales
Marketing
Finances
People
These areas help business owners create stronger foundations so growth becomes sustainable.
Instead of constantly asking, “What else can I add?” profitable businesses ask, “What can I simplify?”
Sallie shared:
“Instead, it is design better, measure smarter, and simplify deeper.”
For interior designers, this could mean creating better client onboarding workflows, improving communication processes, building repeatable project systems, and developing a clearer operational structure.
3. Use AI Tools to Improve Efficiency and Save Time
AI is changing the way creative entrepreneurs operate, but Sallie believes it should not replace creativity—it should support it.
Interior designers often find themselves balancing two roles: the creative director and the unpaid administrative assistant. AI tools can help reduce repetitive tasks so designers can spend more time doing the work they love.
Sallie recommends using AI for tasks like:
Creating client onboarding workflows
Drafting customized contracts
Organizing vendor communication
Building project profitability trackers
Creating sourcing comparisons
She explained:
“You have to know the deep information that you know about design in order for AI to really work well.”
One AI tool Sallie recommends is Claude because designers can create project folders and upload important information like client preferences, contracts, budgets, scope documents, and brand guidelines.
This allows AI to understand the business owner’s voice and create more personalized, aligned content and systems.
Sallie shared:
“It can know you intimately, it can know your brand.”
For designers looking to improve operational efficiency, AI can be a strategic growth partner rather than just a content creation tool.
4. Simplify Your Offers and Find Your Ideal Client
One of the biggest mistakes Sallie sees female entrepreneurs make is believing that more options create more growth.
Many designers try to serve everyone by offering different services, working with every type of client, and creating customized processes every time.
But customization without structure can make your business difficult to manage.
Sallie explained:
“Just because you can serve a particular client does not mean that you should.”
Instead, she recommends getting clear on your ideal client and creating a focused niche. This does not limit your opportunities—it helps you become known faster.
For example, instead of saying you design for anyone looking for a modern transitional home, you could identify a specific audience, such as homeowners creating lake houses or clients completing a specific type of renovation.
A clear niche helps create repeatable systems, a stronger marketing strategy, and easier referrals.
Sallie explained:
“When you focus on one specific area and niche, you become known faster, and your business becomes referable.”
Final Thoughts
Growing a profitable interior design business does not require adding more complexity. The path to sustainable growth is often found through simplicity—creating intentional systems, understanding your numbers, using smart tools, and becoming clear on who you serve. When your business structure supports your creativity, you can create more freedom, better client experiences, and predictable profit.
